As Israel’s military siege on the Jabalia refugee camp and surrounding areas reached its 10th day on October 13, 2024, Palestinian authorities reported that at least 200 individuals have died since Israeli operations commenced earlier this month. The Palestinian news agency Wafa noted that Israel killed at least 17 additional casualties on Sunday morning in central and northern Gaza, which included eight members of a family in the Nuseirat refugee camp and five people in the al-Ettesalat area, west of Jabalia.
Palestinian Ambassador Majed Bamya, who serves as the deputy permanent observer to the UN, stated on X, “What is happening in northern Gaza now is a genocide within the genocide.” Hani Mahmoud from Al Jazeera, reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, mentioned that around 400,000 Palestinians are trapped in northern Gaza, with the Israeli military preventing anyone from leaving despite an evacuation order.
Mahmoud remarked, “What’s happening now is a continuation of the genocidal acts that began a year ago,” adding that over 70 bodies remain in the streets, with civil defense teams unable to retrieve them due to ongoing Israeli bombardments.
Residents in Jabalia and Northern Gaza have been sharing their plight on social media. Anas al-Sharif, a resident of Northern Gaza and Al-Jazeera reporter, said, “As a result of the blockade on Jabalia camp, most injuries caused by Israeli gunfire and shelling end in death. The lack of medical resources and proper treatment options makes it impossible to save most of the wounded.”
Kamel, another resident of Northern Gaza, expressed, “This was literally one of the worst nights we had ever had. We literally didn’t sleep the whole night due to the sounds of bombings that didn’t stop around the clock. All what comes to our mind is that the coming missile is falling upon us. ”
On October 13, the Israeli military announced that 40 targets were struck in Gaza within the last 24 hours, asserting that these strikes destroyed weapons and resulted in the deaths of numerous Hamas fighters. Among those reported killed was a person struck by Israeli warplanes east of Deir el-Balah, while Israeli artillery also reportedly killed three Palestinians and injured several others in the Bureij refugee camp.
